Maybe an invite-only launch could have worked better: giving you a smaller, more manageable group of users while you fixed bugs and stabilized the product. This way, early adopters would have had a better experience and you would have bought yourself more time before scaling to everyone.
In the early internet days, most early adopters were geeks who enjoyed tinkering and were forgiving of imperfections. But today's mainstream users are shaped by professional products built by large teams, so their tolerance for bugs is very low. Once disappointed, many don't return.
An invite-only system could have reduced that risk, limited the number of unhappy users, and helped you grow more sustainably.
